What is the Origin and Meaning of the Last Name Canellas?

The surname Canellas is originally found in Spain and does not have a definitive meaning. Canella was the sweet-tasting bark of a particular tree in the Caribbean which was very similar to cinnamon. During the 17th century, Dutch traders exported this bark. It is possible that people who sold this bark in Spain were referred to as Canellas.

Versions of this surname also exist in Italy and may derive from canale which means canal. In Northern Italy, there are a number of towns that feature the word Canale in which several versions of the surname have developed including Canali, Canales, Canellas and Canaletto.

Italian naming traditions usually lean toward patronymic practices surrounding the name of the father. Less frequently surnames may derive from the village or town someone lived in or owned land. It is this such practice that may have led to the Canellas name in Italy.

Otto Canella was born around the middle of the 11th century in Genoa, Italy. In 1133 Otto became the Consul of the Republic of Genoa. A member of a highly ambitious family, Canella and his children were described as hungry for power with an eye toward their own enrichment. The current royal family of Monaco are descended from Canella and take their name Grimaldi from Otto’s youngest son Grimaldo.

Salvador Canellas, born in Spain in 1944, is a well-known bearer of this name. Canellas was a racing driver who spanned two and four wheels. His career was short but notable as he holds the distinction of being the first Spanish rider to win a motorcycle grand prix.
