The surname Frio originated in Spain during the medieval period. It is derived from the Spanish word "frio," meaning "cold." This suggests that the name likely referred to someone who lived in a particularly cold region or had a cool temperament.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the Frio surname can be found in a 13th-century manuscript from the province of Aragon. It mentions a landowner named Pedro Frio who owned several properties in the village of Bielsa, nestled in the Pyrenees mountains.

In the 15th century, the Frio name appeared in records from the city of Seville, where a family of merchants and traders had established themselves. Juan Frio, born in 1432, was a prominent silk trader who traveled extensively throughout the Mediterranean region.

During the Age of Exploration, the Frio surname began to spread beyond the borders of Spain. In 1521, a navigator named Diego Frio accompanied Ferdinand Magellan on his historic voyage around the world. While Magellan perished in the Philippines, Frio survived and continued on to circumnavigate the globe, becoming one of the first Europeans to do so.

In the 17th century, a military officer named Catalina Frio gained renown for her bravery in the Spanish War of Succession. Born in 1671 in Madrid, she disguised herself as a man to enlist in the army and fought in numerous battles against the French.

Another notable figure was Antonio Frio, a Spanish architect who lived from 1723 to 1799. He was responsible for designing several important buildings in Madrid, including the Royal Palace and the Palacio de las Cortes (Palace of the Courts).

As the centuries passed, the Frio name continued to appear throughout Spain and its territories. In the 18th century, a family of Frios settled in the Philippines, where they became prominent landowners and traders.
