The history of the first name Adelice

The name Adelice is of Old French origin, derived from the Germanic elements "adal" meaning "noble" and "lice" meaning "promise" or "vow". It likely emerged in the Middle Ages, around the 11th or 12th century, when French culture and language were highly influential across Europe.

One of the earliest recorded bearers of the name was Adelice of Louvain, who lived in the 12th century and was the daughter of Godfrey I, Count of Louvain. She married Baldwin IV, Count of Hainaut, and their son later became Baldwin V, Count of Hainaut and Latin Emperor of Constantinople.

Another notable Adelice was Adelice of Burgundy, who lived in the 13th century. She was the daughter of Hugh III, Duke of Burgundy, and married Thibault IV, Count of Champagne. Their son, Thibault V, later became King of Navarre and Count of Champagne.

In the 14th century, Adelice de Montfort was a French noblewoman who lived from 1345 to 1412. She was the daughter of John de Montfort, Duke of Brittany, and was known for her involvement in the Breton War of Succession.

Moving to the 15th century, Adelice de la Tour d'Auvergne was a French noblewoman who lived from 1470 to 1524. She was the daughter of Bertrand V, Count of Auvergne and Boulogne, and married John IV, Count of Auvergne.

In the 16th century, Adelice de Montalembert was a French writer and poet who lived from 1537 to 1615. She was known for her works of religious poetry and her involvement in literary circles in Paris.

While the name Adelice was more common among the nobility and upper classes in medieval and Renaissance times, it has remained in use, albeit less frequently, throughout the centuries. Its meaning of "noble promise" or "noble vow" reflects the name's aristocratic origins and the values associated with nobility during those periods.
