It is derived from the Greek name Demetrios, which itself derives from the name of the ancient Greek goddess Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, grain, and fertility. The name Dimitrije is most commonly found in Slavic cultures, particularly those of Orthodox Christian heritage.

The name Demetrios has a long history, dating back to ancient Greece. It appears in various ancient texts and records, including works by the ancient Greek historian Plutarch. One of the earliest recorded bearers of the name was Demetrius I Poliorcetes, a king of Macedon who lived from 336 to 283 BC.

Dimitrije Rupel, a Slovenian politician and diplomat, served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia from 2000 to 2008. He was born in 1946 and is still living today.
