The history of the first name Eldar

The name Eldar originates from the Quenya Elvish language created by J.R.R. Tolkien in his books set in Middle-earth. Quenya is one of the Elvish languages spoken by the Elves in Tolkien's legendarium. Eldar means "People of the Stars" or "Elves" in Quenya.

Although Tolkien derived the name from his invented languages, it bears a striking resemblance to the Old Norse name Aldar, which means "age" or "lifetime." However, there is no evidence of a direct linguistic connection between the two names.

The name Eldar first appeared in Tolkien's seminal work, The Silmarillion, published posthumously in 1977. The Eldar were the second clan of Elves who awoke at Cuiviénen, the Waters of Awakening, in the First Age of Middle-earth.

One of the most notable Eldar in Tolkien's works is Eldar the Mariner, a seafarer from the island of Númenor who sailed into the Undying Lands and returned to Middle-earth, becoming the first mortal to achieve this feat.

Outside of Tolkien's works, the name Eldar has been used by a few notable individuals. Eldar Radzhabov (1957-2000) was a Tajik journalist and political activist who advocated for democracy and human rights in Tajikistan.

Eldar Ryazanov (1927-2015) was a celebrated Russian filmmaker known for his satirical comedies, such as The Incredible Adventures of Italians in Russia and The Garage.

Eldar Shengelaia (born 1933) is a Georgian film director and screenwriter who has directed several critically acclaimed films, including Melodies of the Vera Quarter and Extraordinary Exhibition.

Eldar Djangirov (1968-2022) was a Russian pop singer and songwriter who achieved significant popularity in the 1990s and 2000s, particularly with his hit song "Tango."
