The history of the first name Maxence

Maxence is a French masculine given name derived from the Late Latin name Maxentius, which was derived from the Roman family name Maximus, meaning "greatest". The name was originally popular in ancient Rome and surrounding regions during the Roman Empire.

The name Maxentius was borne by a Roman emperor who reigned from 306 to 312 AD. He was born in around 278 AD and was the son of Maximian, who was co-emperor alongside Diocletian. Maxentius is best known for his conflict with Constantine the Great, which culminated in the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 AD, where Constantine's victory led to the rapid Christianization of the Roman Empire.

One of the earliest recorded uses of the name Maxence can be found in the medieval French epic poem "The Song of Roland", which dates back to around the 11th century. In the poem, Maxence is mentioned as one of the Saracen (Muslim) characters.

Throughout history, several notable individuals have borne the name Maxence. One of the earliest was Maxence de Baugé (c. 1390 - c. 1467), a French nobleman and military leader who fought in the Hundred Years' War. Another Maxence de Baugé (c. 1628 - 1701) was a French churchman who served as the Bishop of Nantes.

In the 17th century, Maxence Jaillot (1637 - 1712) was a French cartographer and publisher who produced several atlases and maps of France. Maxence Van der Meersch (1907 - 1951) was a 20th-century French novelist and playwright best known for his works depicting the lives of working-class people in northern France.

Maxence Piriou (1923 - 2011) was a French architect and urban planner who designed several notable buildings in Paris, including the Tour Montparnasse skyscraper. He was also involved in the redevelopment of the Les Halles district in the 1970s.
