The history of the first name Pasquinel

The name Pasquinel is derived from the Italian word "Pasquino," which refers to a famous ancient Roman statue known as the Talking Statue or the Statue of Pasquino. The statue itself dates back to the 3rd century BC and is believed to have originally depicted either Hercules or Ajax.

During the 16th century, the Pasquino statue became a popular place for Romans to anonymously post satirical poems and criticisms of the Pope and the Church. These handwritten verses and epigrams came to be known as "pasquinades," and the statue itself became a symbol of free speech and political dissent.

One of the earliest recorded uses of the name Pasquinel can be found in the work of the Italian writer and satirist Pietro Aretino (1492-1556). Aretino referred to himself as "Pasquinel" in his writings, likely as a nod to the Pasquino statue and the tradition of pasquinades.

Another notable figure associated with the name Pasquinel was the French satirist and playwright Pasquin Le Motteux (1663-1718). Le Motteux was known for his biting satires and translations of Spanish and Italian works, including the first English translation of Miguel de Cervantes' "Don Quixote."

In the 18th century, the name Pasquinel was also used as a pseudonym by the English writer and critic John Oldmixon (1673-1742). Oldmixon published several works under the name "Pasquinel," including political satires and critiques of contemporary writers and politicians.

One of the most famous bearers of the name Pasquinel was the Italian artist and caricaturist Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1755). Ghezzi was known for his satirical drawings and caricatures, many of which were inspired by the tradition of pasquinades and the Pasquino statue.

A more recent figure to bear the name Pasquinel was the French writer and critic Louis Passard (1903-1998), who published under the pseudonym "Pasquinel." Passard was known for his critical essays and reviews on literature and art, as well as his translations of works by authors such as T.S. Eliot and James Joyce.
