The history of the first name Severine

Severine is a feminine given name of French origin, derived from the Late Latin name Severinus, which itself comes from the Roman name Severus, meaning "severe" or "strict." The name Severinus was borne by several early saints and martyrs in the Catholic Church.

The name Severine emerged in the Middle Ages, particularly in France, where it was influenced by the veneration of Saint Severin, a 5th-century apostle of Noricum (modern-day Austria). Severine was a popular name among French nobility and the aristocracy during this period.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name Severine dates back to the 11th century, when it was borne by Severine, the daughter of Fulk III, Count of Anjou. Another notable figure was Severine of Zweinbrücken (1275-1309), a German noblewoman and abbess of the Kloster Edelstetten monastery.

In the 15th century, Severine de Castiglione (1415-1483) was an Italian nun and mystic who is venerated as a beata (blessed) in the Catholic Church. During the Renaissance period, Severine de Montespan (1540-1611) was a French courtier and mistress of King Henry IV of France.

In more recent history, Severine Neff (1870-1958) was a Swiss feminist and pacifist who campaigned for women's rights and international peace. Severine Bressol (1925-2002) was a French actress known for her roles in films such as "The Longest Day" and "The Day of the Jackal."
