The name was first popularized by Alexander the Great, the Macedonian king and military commander who conquered much of the ancient world between 336-323 BC.

The earliest documented use of the name Sikander can be traced back to the 4th century BC, when Alexander the Great invaded the Indian subcontinent and established a empire that stretched from Greece to India. Over time, the name Sikander became a popular name among Muslims in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in regions like modern-day Pakistan, Afghanistan, and parts of India. Another notable figure with the name Sikander was Sikandar Shah Suri, who ruled the Sur Empire in northern India from 1555 to 1559. He was known for his military campaigns and for commissioning the construction of the famous Purana Qila fort in Delhi.

In later centuries, the name Sikander continued to be used by various Muslim rulers and noblemen in the Indian subcontinent. One prominent example is Sikandar Jah, the last Nizam of Hyderabad, who ruled the Princely State of Hyderabad from 1967 to 1971.
