The history of the first name Trinley

The name Trinley is of Tibetan Buddhist origin, derived from the Sanskrit word "tri" meaning "three" and the Tibetan word "lay" meaning "spiritual practice" or "path". It is believed to have originated in the 14th century CE during the time of the Tibetan Buddhist reformer Je Tsongkhapa, who is considered the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

The name Trinley is closely associated with the Dalai Lama lineage, as several Dalai Lamas have had this name as part of their full monastic title. The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born Lhamo Dhondup in 1935, but his monastic name is Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso Trinley Kunkhyab Palzangpo, with Trinley being part of his religious title.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name Trinley can be found in the writings of the 1st Dalai Lama, Gendun Drup (1391-1474), who was born Pema Dorje but took the monastic name Gendun Drup Trinley Palzangpo. Another notable figure was the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso (1683-1706), whose full name included Trinley Kunkhyab Chhokley Namgyal.

Trinley Thaye Dorje (born 1983) is the current spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, recognized as the 17th Karmapa, one of the most important lineages in Tibetan Buddhism. His full name is Trinley Thaye Dorje Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyalpo.
