The name appears referring to Wulfric Spot, an early 11th century nobleman and landowner in Wiltshire, England. Around the same time period, Wulfric the Illiterate was an early 11th century abbot of the monastery of New Minster in Winchester.

In the 9th century, Wulfric was the name of an Anglo-Saxon Earl who witnessed a charter issued by King Beorhtric of Wessex in 800 AD. Later in the 11th century, Wulfric of Haselbury was a wealthy Anglo-Saxon landowner who founded the church of St. John the Baptist in Somerset, England around 1065.

A more famous bearer of the name was Wulfric of Mercia, who lived in the early 11th century and was a powerful Anglo-Saxon nobleman and Earl of Mercia from 1007 to 1053. He played an influential role in the politics of England during the reigns of several kings.

Moving into the Middle Ages, Wulfric or Wulfrick was also the name of an Archdeacon of Wolverhampton in the late 12th century. He served under Roger de Molbray, the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield between 1186 and 1195.
