The history of the last name Affolder

The surname Affolder is believed to have originated in the English county of Derbyshire during the late medieval period. It is thought to derive from the Old English words "aeffald" meaning "sincere" or "honest" and "fald" meaning "sheepfold" or "enclosure for livestock." This suggests the name may have initially referred to someone who worked with or owned a sincere or honest sheepfold.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name appears in the 1379 Poll Tax Returns for Yorkshire, where a John Affolder is listed as a resident of the village of Addingham. The spelling "Affolder" itself is first seen in 16th century parish records from the village of Eyam in Derbyshire, with entries for an Agnes Affolder (born circa 1520) and her son William Affolder (born 1547).

In the 17th century, the Affolder name crops up in various records from the nearby Derbyshire village of Stoney Middleton. A Robert Affolder (born around 1610) is recorded as holding land there, and his descendants can be traced through baptismal, marriage and burial records over subsequent generations. This Stoney Middleton branch may be related to the earlier Affolder residents of Eyam.

Outside of Derbyshire, early instances of the surname are relatively scarce. However, one notable bearer was the English sculptor John Affolder (1689-1766) who was born in London and produced works for several churches and aristocratic estates. Another was Richard Affolder (1726-1802), a farmer from Buckinghamshire who wrote a diary documenting agricultural life in the 18th century which has survived as a historical source.

Other examples of the name from past centuries include Mary Affolder (born around 1750) who married into the Dyott family of Freeford Manor in Staffordshire, and William Affolder (1801-1865), a farmer from Cheshire. Given the geographical spread, it seems the surname had become reasonably well-established across parts of central and northern England by the 1800s.
