The history of the last name Alligood

The surname Alligood originated in England, with records dating back to the 13th century. It is believed to have derived from the Old English words "alu" meaning alder tree, and "god" meaning good or excellent, indicating that the name likely referred to someone who lived near a particularly fine alder grove.

One of the earliest known references to the name can be found in the Hundred Rolls of 1273, where a Thomas Alugodd is listed as a landowner in Oxfordshire. The spelling variations at the time included Alugodd, Alewode, and Alewod.

By the 14th century, the name had evolved to its more recognizable form of Alligood. In the Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield in 1317, a Richard Aligode is mentioned as a tenant farmer. This suggests that the Alligood family had established roots in Yorkshire as well.

The Alligood name appears to have been particularly prevalent in the counties of Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire during the Middle Ages. In the Pipe Rolls of 1332, a John Aligode is recorded as owing taxes in Oxfordshire.

One notable bearer of the Alligood name was Sir William Alligood, a knight who fought alongside the Black Prince at the Battle of Crécy in 1346. He was born around 1310 and died in 1382.

Another historical figure was Thomas Alligood, a merchant and alderman in the city of London in the late 15th century. Records show he was born in 1441 and died in 1507.

In the 16th century, the Alligood family had members living in the town of Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. A William Alligood was recorded as a landowner there in the Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1524.

Another prominent individual was John Alligood, a clergyman who served as the Vicar of St. Mary's Church in Reading, Berkshire, from 1574 until his death in 1611.

While the Alligood name has its roots in England, it eventually spread to other parts of the world through emigration. One notable example is Thomas Alligood, who was born in Buckinghamshire in 1620 and later settled in Virginia, USA, in the mid-17th century.
