The history of the last name Altland

The surname ALTLAND has its origins in the German language. It is thought to have derived from the Old German words "alt" meaning old and "lant" meaning land or country, referring to someone who lived in an older settled area or region.

The earliest known recordings of the name can be traced back to the 13th century in parts of southern Germany and Switzerland. Variations in spelling over the centuries included Altlandt, Altlande, and Altlanden before becoming more standardized.

While not appearing in the famous Domesday Book of 1086, there are references to the name Altland in local municipal records and monasteries from around 1250 onwards in the Rhine and Danube river valleys.

One of the first known bearers was Henrich Altlandt, born around 1290 in the town of Freiburg im Breisgau. He was a landholder and minor nobleman documented in tax registries from that era.

Another early example was Johannes Altlanden, a Benedictine monk at the Reichenau Abbey on Lake Constance in the early 1300s. He was known for transcribing and preserving various religious texts.

Moving into the Renaissance, Altlands appear in records from Nuremberg and other imperial cities in southern Germany. Notably, Hans Altlandt (1480-1551) was a successful merchant and member of the city council in Rothenburg ob der Tauber during the 1500s.

During the Thirty Years' War of 1618-1648, Wilhelm Altland (1595-1672) fought as an infantry captain for Protestant forces and was praised for his bravery at the Battle of Nördlingen in 1634.

Later, in the 1700s, we find Sophie Altland (1723-1787), who came from a family of millers near Stuttgart. She gained some renown as a self-taught astronomer and celestial observer in her local region.

As the name spread more widely across German-speaking lands in the modern era, other notable bearers included the Austrian painter Josef Altland (1859-1927) and literary scholar Richard Altland (1890-1965) who specialized in the works of Goethe.
