The surname Anez originated in Spain during the medieval period, deriving from the Old Spanish word "anez", meaning "dweller by the alder trees". It was initially a descriptive nickname given to individuals who lived near groves of alder trees, later becoming an inherited surname.

The earliest recorded bearers of the Anez surname can be traced back to the 12th century in the regions of Castile and Aragon. One of the earliest known references is found in the Cartulario de Covarrubias, a medieval manuscript from the Monastery of Covarrubias, which mentions a certain Pedro Anez in the year 1187.

During the Reconquista, the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors, the Anez family played a role in the expansion of Christian territories. Some historical records mention a knight named Rodrigo Anez, who fought alongside King Alfonso VIII of Castile in the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212.

As the Anez family spread throughout Spain, variations in spelling emerged, such as Añez, Aniez, and Anes. Juan Anez was born in Seville in 1480 and served as Magellan's chief pilot until his death in 1521.

In the 18th century, Maria Anez Borrego, born in 1711 in Seville, gained recognition as a renowned Spanish poet and writer. Her works, which included religious poetry and plays, were highly acclaimed during her lifetime.

The Anez surname also found its way to Latin America during the Spanish colonization of the Americas.
