The history of the last name Argote

The surname Argote originates from Spain and can be traced back to the 15th century. It is believed to have derived from the Spanish word "argote," which means "grappling iron" or "hook." The name may have been initially given to someone who worked with such tools or had a physical characteristic resembling a hook.

One of the earliest recorded mentions of the Argote surname can be found in the archives of the city of Seville, where a document from 1487 refers to a certain Juan Argote, a merchant from that region. Another early reference is in the records of the Spanish Inquisition, where a Fernando Argote is mentioned as being tried for heresy in 1501.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Argote family appears to have been prominent in the southern Spanish regions of Andalusia and Extremadura. A notable figure from this era was Diego de Argote y Molina (1550-1615), a historian and genealogist who wrote extensively about the nobility of Spain.

In the 18th century, the name spread to other parts of Spain, as well as to the Spanish colonies in the Americas. Juan Bautista Argote (1710-1785), a priest and scholar from Seville, made significant contributions to the study of ancient Roman inscriptions and manuscripts.

As the surname Argote became more widespread, it also underwent variations in spelling, such as Argotti, Argotta, and Argotti-Saladrigas. One individual of note with this variation was Antonio Argotti-Saladrigas (1839-1917), a Cuban diplomat and writer who served as the Minister Plenipotentiary of Cuba to the United States.

Other notable individuals with the Argote surname include Manuel Argote (1847-1922), a Mexican politician and diplomat who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, and Pedro Argote (1905-1981), a Peruvian writer and journalist known for his contributions to Peruvian literature.

While the Argote surname has its roots in Spain, it has since spread to various parts of the world, including Latin America and other Spanish-speaking regions, reflecting the historical migration patterns and cultural influences of the Spanish Empire.
