The history of the last name Auza

The surname AUZA has its origins in the Basque region of Spain and France. It is derived from the Basque word "autza," which means "hill" or "hillock." The name likely originated as a descriptive surname for someone who lived near or on a hill.

The earliest recorded instances of the surname date back to the 13th century in the Basque provinces of Spain, such as Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. Variations in spelling included Auza, Auça, and Aucía. These early records can be found in local parish registers and municipal archives.

One of the earliest known bearers of the surname was Lope de Auza, a landowner and farmer who lived in the village of Rentería, Gipuzkoa, in the late 15th century. Records from 1492 mention him as a participant in a local dispute over land boundaries.

In the 16th century, the name appeared in the Basque town of Tolosa, where Juan de Auza was a prominent merchant and member of the town council. He was born around 1510 and died in 1578.

Another notable individual with this surname was María Auza, a Basque writer and poet who lived in the late 17th century. She was born in Bilbao around 1650 and published a collection of poems titled "Versos Amorosos" in 1685.

During the Spanish colonial era, some bearers of the surname migrated to the Americas, particularly to Mexico and Cuba. One such individual was Pedro de Auza, a Basque sailor who arrived in Veracruz, Mexico, in the early 1600s and later settled in the region.

In the 19th century, Ignacio Auza was a prominent political figure in the Basque Country. Born in San Sebastián in 1810, he served as a deputy in the Spanish Parliament and was a vocal supporter of Basque autonomy.
