The history of the last name Bazor

The surname "BAZOR" is believed to have originated in the region of Normandy, France during the 11th century. It is derived from the old French word "bazer", meaning "to gaze or stare", possibly referring to someone with a distinctive or intense gaze.

The earliest recorded example of the name dates back to the 1086 Domesday Book, where it appears as "Baso". This entry is thought to be a reference to a landowner or tenant in the county of Hampshire.

By the 13th century, the name had evolved to its more modern spelling of "Bazor", as evidenced by its appearance in the Rotuli Hundredorum, a census-like record of landholders and tenants in England from 1273.

One notable bearer of the name was Sir Robert Bazor (1285-1349), a knight who served in the Hundred Years' War under King Edward III. He is mentioned in several contemporary chronicles for his valor in the Battle of Crécy in 1346.

Another historically significant figure was William Bazor (1510-1568), a merchant and alderman in the city of London during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He is recorded as having been granted a coat of arms in 1562, indicating his family's rise to prominence.

In the 17th century, the Bazor name appears in parish records from the village of Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire, suggesting the family had spread to various parts of England by this time.

One particularly distinguished individual was Sir Thomas Bazor (1632-1699), a successful lawyer and judge who served as Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench from 1687 to 1688 under King James II.

The name also found its way to the American colonies, with records showing a John Bazor (1715-1793) as one of the earliest settlers in the Virginia colony, having arrived from England in the 1730s.
