The surname BEAUDIN originated in France during the late Middle Ages. It is derived from the Old French words "beau" meaning beautiful and "din" referring to a ridge or hill. The name likely referred to someone who lived near a picturesque ridge or hilltop.
One of the earliest recorded instances of the name was a Jehan Beaudin, born around 1375 in the village of Aubigny-sur-Nère in central France. Aubigny's location on a scenic hilltop overlooking the Nère River may have inspired the name.
Another early bearer was Guillaume Beaudin, a soldier from Normandy who fought in the Hundred Years' War in the early 1400s. Records show he was knighted by the Dauphin (later King Charles VII) on the battlefield near Orléans in 1429 for his bravery.
In the 1500s, the BEAUDIN name spread to other areas of northern France like Picardy and Île-de-France. A Philippe Beaudin from Amiens is listed in tax records from 1578. Around 1610, Jacques Beaudin from Paris published respected works on mathematics and astronomy.
As the name moved into the modern era, Marie-Louise Beaudin (1773-1849) was a governess employed by Napoleon Bonaparte's sister Caroline in the early 1800s. She kept a famous diary documenting life in elite Parisian circles.
Among the most renowned bearers was Théodore Beaudin (1842-1920), a statesman who served as mayor of Reims and represented the Marne region in the French National Assembly for over 30 years in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
While widespread in France by this time, the name also grew more common in Quebec, Canada after the 17th century among French settlers. René-Charles Beaudin (1701-1761) was one of the earliest recorded examples there, living in Trois-Rivières.
