The surname BEKINS is of English origin, and is thought to have originated in the county of Suffolk in the early medieval period. It is believed to be a locational surname, derived from a now-lost place name, possibly from the Old English words "bec" meaning brook or stream, and "hine" meaning servant or follower.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name can be found in the Feet of Fines records for Suffolk in 1292, where a William de Bekyn is mentioned. The Feet of Fines were legal documents that recorded the transfer of land ownership in medieval England.

In the 14th century, the name appears in various spellings in the Pipe Rolls of Suffolk, such as Bekyn, Bekkyn, and Bekyne. The Pipe Rolls were financial records maintained by the Exchequer, which recorded the collection of taxes and other revenues owed to the Crown.

A notable figure in history bearing the BEKINS surname was Sir Thomas Bekins (c.1460-1528), who served as Lord Mayor of London in 1519. He was a merchant and a member of the Worshipful Company of Mercers, one of the oldest livery companies in the City of London.

In the 17th century, the name appears in the parish records of several villages in Suffolk, including Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket, and Woodbridge. One such entry from 1632 records the baptism of Robert Bekins in Bury St Edmunds.

A notable bearer of the BEKINS surname in later centuries was Sir Richard Bekins (1698-1772), who was a British naval officer and Member of Parliament. He served as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy's North American Station during the French and Indian War.
