The surname Bemrose originated in the English counties of Derbyshire and Staffordshire during the late medieval period. It is believed to be a locational name derived from the place name "Bemersley" or "Bemersley Hall" near Bolsover, Derbyshire. The name is thought to come from the Old English words "beomet" meaning "bent grass" and "leah" meaning "meadow or clearing."

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name appears in the Derbyshire Feet of Fines from 1284, where it is spelled "de Bemersleye." The Hundred Rolls of 1273 also mention a Robert de Bemeresleye from Derbyshire. These early spellings suggest the name's origins lie in the village of Bemersley.

In the 16th century, records show variations like "Bemrosse" and "Beamerose." During the 17th and 18th centuries, the spelling evolved closer to the modern form of "Bemrose." Some notable individuals with this surname from these eras include William Bemrose (1640-1708), a farmer from Ashover, Derbyshire, and John Bemrose (1728-1808), a lead miner and smelter from Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

The name also has connections to nearby Staffordshire. The Staffordshire Hearth Tax of 1666 lists a Randle Bemrose from Leek. Additionally, the parish registers of Dilhorne, Staffordshire, record the baptism of John Bemrose in 1670.

One of the earliest known instances of the Bemrose name appearing in a published work is in Thomas Bateman's "Vestiges of the Antiquities of Derbyshire" from 1849, which mentions a "Mr. Bemrose of Derby" as a local historian and antiquarian. Another notable figure was Henry Howe Bemrose (1827-1911), a printer and publisher from Derby who founded the Bemrose printing firm.
