The history of the last name Borysewicz

The surname Borysewicz is of Polish origin, originating in the 16th century. It is derived from the Polish personal name Boreysz, a diminutive form of Borys, which in turn comes from the Greek name Βοριάδης (Boriadēs). Borys was introduced to Poland through the Eastern Orthodox Church and can be traced back to Borys I, the ruler of Bulgaria from 852 to 889 AD.

The earliest recorded instance of the Borysewicz surname dates back to 1535 in the village of Boryszewo, located in the Masovian Voivodeship of central Poland. This village name, from which the surname likely originated, means "village of Borys" in Polish. The name was initially spelled in various forms, such as Borysewycz, Borysiewicz, and Borisewicz, before the current spelling became standardized.

In the 17th century, the Borysewicz surname appeared in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, located in what is now northern Poland and western Prussia. A notable figure from this region was Krzysztof Borysewicz (1620-1695), a prominent Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth nobleman and military commander who fought in the Polish-Swedish wars.

The name also spread to other parts of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, including present-day Belarus and Ukraine. In the 18th century, a Borysewicz family was recorded in the town of Krzemieniec, now located in western Ukraine. One member of this family, Jan Borysewicz (1725-1792), was a respected physician and professor at the Krzemieniec Lyceum.

As Poles emigrated to other parts of Europe and beyond, the Borysewicz surname traveled with them. In the late 19th century, Józef Borysewicz (1848-1919) was a Polish-American painter and art teacher who lived and worked in Chicago, Illinois. Another notable figure was Wacław Borysewicz (1878-1954), a Polish-Russian engineer and inventor who made significant contributions to aviation technology.

Other historical figures with the Borysewicz surname include Stanisław Borysewicz (1864-1943), a Polish linguist and professor at the University of Lviv, and Ignacy Borysewicz (1879-1956), a Polish-Belarusian Catholic priest and activist who advocated for the rights of the Belarusian minority in Poland.
