It is believed to have derived from a combination of the German words "Burg" meaning castle or fortress, and "kroff" which is an old spelling variation of the word "graben" meaning ditch or moat. This suggests that the name may have originally referred to someone who lived near or worked at a castle with a surrounding ditch or moat.

One of the earliest known references to the name BURCROFF can be found in the church records of the town of Augsburg in Bavaria, Germany from the year 1587, where a Hans BURCROFF was listed as a blacksmith. Another early mention is in the municipal records of the city of Nuremberg from 1612, where a Johann BURCROFF is recorded as a miller.

The BURCROFF name appears to have spread from Bavaria to other parts of Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries.
