The history of the last name Catterlin

The surname Catterlin has its origins in the northern English counties of Northumberland and Durham. It first appeared as a locational surname in the 13th century, derived from the old English words 'cateran' meaning to gather and 'lin' meaning a small hill or rising ground. This suggests the name may have referred to a person who lived near a gathering place on a small hill.

The earliest recorded mention of the name appears in the Court Rolls of the County of Durham in 1297, where a William Caterlyn is listed as a freeholder. Similar spellings from this period include Caterlin, Caterling and Catterline. There are no known entries for the name in the Domesday Book of 1086.

By the 14th century, the name had spread to other parts of northern England, particularly Yorkshire. The Poll Tax records of 1379 list a John Caterlin residing in the village of Osmotherley. Variations like Catterling and Catherlin also appear around this time.

One of the earliest known bearers of the name was Richard Caterlyn, born around 1420 in the village of Stanhope, County Durham. He was a yeoman farmer who held lands in the area. His descendants continued using the Caterlyn spelling into the 16th century.

Notable people with this surname include:

  1. Thomas Catterlin (c.1520-1582), an English Protestant reformer and minister from Berwick-upon-Tweed.

  2. Edmond Catterlin (1558-1623), a member of the Virginia Company who helped establish the Jamestown colony.

  3. Margaret Catterlin (1638-1712), one of the last people convicted of witchcraft in England, from the village of Longwitton, Northumberland.

  4. John Catterlin (1675-1741), a merchant and alderman in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

  5. William Catterlin (1799-1868), a noted historian from Durham who wrote extensively on the local families and place names of the region.

The name Catterlin continued to be mainly concentrated in northern England until the 19th century when some families migrated to other parts of Britain and abroad. However, its origins and earliest recordings can be traced back to the northeastern counties over 700 years ago.
