The surname CHABES is of French origin, emerging in the late 16th century. It is believed to have derived from the Old French word "chabe," which referred to a type of small fishing boat or vessel commonly used along the coastal regions of northern France.

The earliest known record of the CHABES name appears in a maritime registry from the port city of Calais, dated 1587. This document lists several fishermen and sailors bearing variations of the name, including Chabet, Chabez, and Chabois.
