The history of the last name Champaco

The surname CHAMPACO is believed to have originated in Spain during the 16th century. It is thought to be derived from the Spanish word "champa," which referred to a type of vine or grapevine, and the suffix "-co," which was commonly used in Spanish surnames of that era.

The earliest known record of the CHAMPACO surname dates back to a land deed from the city of Seville in 1572, where a certain Juan Champaco was listed as a landowner. This suggests that the name was already established in southern Spain by the late 16th century.

In the 17th century, the name CHAMPACO appears in several historical documents related to the Spanish colonization of the Americas. For instance, a Pedro Champaco is listed as a member of an expedition to the Spanish territories in present-day Mexico in 1624.

One of the earliest known bearers of the CHAMPACO surname was Sebastián Champaco, a Spanish soldier who fought in the Siege of Barcelona during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714. He was born in 1685 and died in 1763.

Another notable figure was María Champaco, a philanthropist and benefactor who lived in Valencia in the late 18th century. She is known for establishing a charitable foundation to support orphaned children and the poor, which still operates today under her name.

In the 19th century, the CHAMPACO surname can be found among the prominent wine-making families of the Rioja region in northern Spain. One such family was led by Andrés Champaco, who was born in 1812 and is credited with pioneering some of the modern winemaking techniques still used in the area.

During the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, a Colonel Javier Champaco served in the Republican forces and was celebrated for his defense of the city of Madrid against the Nationalist uprising. He was born in 1898 and died in 1939, shortly after the end of the war.

While the CHAMPACO surname is still found primarily in Spain today, it has also spread to other parts of the world through immigration, particularly to Latin American countries with historical ties to Spain.
