The surname Cheromiah originates from the small rural village of Chernomaya in the Novgorod region of northwestern Russia. It dates back to the late 15th century and is derived from the old Russian words "chern" meaning black and "maya" meaning small stream or brook, referring to the dark waters of a nearby river.
Some of the earliest recorded instances of the name can be found in parish records from the 16th century, where it appears spelled as Chernomaiev or Chernomayev. A farmer named Ivan Chernomayev is listed in the census records of the village of Dubrovka in 1597.
The name made its way into historical records during the Time of Troubles in Russia in the early 1600s. A Cossack soldier named Fyodor Cheromiah fought alongside the rebel forces against the Polish-Lithuanian occupation of Moscow in 1612. His name is mentioned in the chronicles of the Muscovite uprising.
As the Cheromiah family spread across Russia over the centuries, variations in spelling emerged such as Cheromayev, Cheromiaev, and Cheromiakhov. In 1812, a cavalry officer named Yegor Cheromiaev took part in the Battle of Borodino against Napoleon's invading forces.
A notable bearer of the name was the 19th century Russian writer and philosopher Pyotr Cheromiaev (1819-1892), best known for his philosophical treatise "On the Nature of Reason". Another was the military commander Andrei Cheromiakhov (1892-1946) who led Soviet forces in the Battle of Kursk during World War II.
Other historical figures include the architect Vasily Cheromayev (1857-1924) who designed several churches and public buildings in Moscow, and the Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, Ivan Cheromiaev (1914-1989), who competed in the 1952 and 1956 Summer Games.
