It is thought to derive from the old Czech word "chryn", which referred to a type of small horn or trumpet used in medieval times. This suggests that the name may have originally been an occupational surname given to someone who made or played these instruments.

The earliest known record of the surname CHRIN dates back to 1372, when a man named Jan Chryn was listed as a resident of the town of Jihlava in the Vysočina region of what is now the Czech Republic. Other early spellings of the name included Chrynn, Chryne, and Chrynne.
