The surname CIURA originated in Poland during the Middle Ages. It likely derived from the Old Polish word "ciura," which referred to a type of boot or legging worn by soldiers or travelers. This suggests the name may have been an occupational surname for a shoemaker or someone who made these boots.

The earliest recorded instances of the CIURA surname date back to the 15th century in historical documents from the Krakow region of southern Poland. It appears in municipal records, tax rolls, and parish registers from towns like Bochnia, Tarnow, and Nowy Sacz.

One of the first notable bearers of the name was Jan Ciura, a merchant from Bochnia who is mentioned in a 1487 court document regarding a property dispute. Another early record is of Marcin Ciura, a soldier who fought in the Polish-Teutonic War of 1519-1521 under King Sigismund I the Old.
