The surname CMAR originated in Scotland in the late 15th century. It is believed to be a variant spelling of the Scottish name MacMar, which itself derives from the Gaelic 'mac mhair', meaning 'son of the great one'. The name may have originated in the Scottish Highlands, but its earliest recorded use was in the coastal Lowlands region.

The CMAR name is also connected to several place names in Scotland. The village of Carmair in Angus may have derived its name from the surname, or vice versa. Similarly, the lands of Craigmair in Aberdeenshire were once owned by a family of that spelling in the 17th century.
