The surname DACHS has its origins in Germany, with records dating back to the 12th century. It is derived from the Middle High German word "dahs," which means "badger." This suggests that the name may have been originally a nickname or occupation name for someone who hunted or worked with badgers.

The earliest known bearer of the name was Rudolf Dachs, who was mentioned in a document from the town of Goslar in Lower Saxony in 1186. Another early record is from the city of Mainz in 1273, where a certain Hermannus Dachse was listed as a landowner.

In the 14th century, the name appears in various spellings, such as Dachse, Dachsen, and Dachsser, across different regions of Germany. One notable figure from this period was Johann Dachser, a prominent merchant from Augsburg who was involved in the textile trade with Italy (c. 1320-1385).

During the 15th and 16th centuries, the name spread to other parts of Europe, including Switzerland and Austria. In the Swiss city of Basel, there was a family of goldsmiths called Dachsen, who were active from the late 15th century to the mid-16th century.

One of the most famous individuals with the surname DACHS was Johann Dachser (1567-1638), a German Jesuit priest and philosopher who taught at the University of Ingolstadt. He published several works on logic and metaphysics, including "Philosophia naturalis" (1618).

Another notable bearer of the name was Johann Friedrich Dachse (1756-1817), a German theologian and author who wrote extensively on the history of the Reformation and the life of Martin Luther.

In the 19th century, the surname DACHS was present in various parts of Germany, as well as in regions with German immigrant communities, such as the United States and Russia.
