The surname Daugaard has its origins in Denmark. It is derived from the Old Danish words "dav" meaning damp or wet, and "gard" meaning farm or homestead. This suggests the name originally referred to someone who lived on a damp or marshy farm.

The earliest recorded spelling of the name dates back to the late 16th century in parish records from the village of Borreby on the Danish island of Funen. Variations like Daufgaard and Dawgaard were common in these early mentions.

In the 1600s, the surname appears in records from Svendborg on Funen as well as the nearby islands of Aeroe and Tåsinge, indicating it was concentrated in this coastal region of southern Denmark at that time. Some of the earliest bearers may have been farmers living on the low-lying marshy lands.
