The surname Delamar originated in France during the medieval period. It is derived from the French words "de la" meaning "of the" and "mar" meaning "sea" or "ocean". The name is thought to have been initially given to someone who lived near the sea or who worked in a maritime profession.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name Delamar can be found in a 13th century cartulary from the Normandy region of France. This document mentions a landowner named Raoul Delamar who held property near the coastal town of Dieppe.

In the 14th century, records show a knight named Geoffroi Delamar who fought in the Hundred Years' War under the banner of King Charles VI of France. He was noted for his bravery at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.

During the 16th century, the Delamar family established themselves in the Brittany region of northwestern France. A prominent member was Michel Delamar (1540-1623), a merchant and ship owner who traded with ports across Europe and the Mediterranean.

In the 17th century, Jacques Delamar (1612-1689) was a French explorer and navigator who sailed to the Caribbean and helped establish French colonies in the West Indies. He documented his voyages in a logbook that is now held in the French National Archives.

The 18th century saw the birth of Pierre-Ambroise Delamar (1741-1805), a French playwright and librettist who wrote several popular operas and comedies that were performed in Paris and other major cities across Europe.

As the Delamar name spread throughout France over the centuries, it also became associated with various place names that incorporated the word "mar" such as Marville, Marvejols, and Marsat. However, the direct connection between the surname and these locations is unclear.
