The history of the last name Depuydt

The surname DEPUYDT originated in the Flanders region of Belgium and northern France during the Middle Ages. It is derived from the Old French words "de" meaning "of" or "from" and "puydde" or "puidde" referring to a well or deep pit, suggesting the name may have referred to someone who lived near such a landmark.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the DEPUYDT name dates back to the 13th century in the town of Ypres, where a Jehan de Puidde is mentioned in local records from 1268. The spelling variations at the time included de Puidde, de Pudde, and de Puydde.

In the 14th century, there are references to a Gillart de Puidde who owned land in the village of Kemmel near Ypres, as recorded in a manuscript from 1376. The name also appears in the nearby town of Poperinge, where a Pieter de Pudde is listed as a landowner in 1387.

During the 15th century, the DEPUYDT name spread to other parts of Flanders and the Low Countries. In 1412, a Wouter de Puydde is recorded as a citizen of Ghent, and a Jacop de Puidde is mentioned in the town of Bruges in 1457.

One notable figure with the DEPUYDT name was Gilles de Puidde (1510-1572), a Flemish merchant and alderman in the city of Antwerp. He was a prominent member of the local guild and played a role in the city's economic affairs during the reign of Charles V.

Another significant individual was Jan de Puidde (1635-1712), a Flemish painter and engraver known for his landscapes and religious works. He was born in Bruges and studied under the Dutch master Jacob van Ruisdael, later becoming a member of the prestigious Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp.

In the 18th century, a branch of the DEPUYDT family settled in the Netherlands, where the name was sometimes spelled as de Puit or de Puyt. One member, Pieter de Puyt (1722-1798), was a respected lawyer and magistrate in the city of Rotterdam.

Other notable individuals with the DEPUYDT surname include Lodewijk de Puidde (1845-1912), a Belgian writer and poet from Ostend, and Henri de Puidde (1876-1944), a French architect and urban planner who worked on several projects in Paris during the early 20th century.
