The history of the last name DeShazor

The surname DESHAZOR is believed to have originated in France during the late medieval period. It is thought to be derived from the Old French words "des" meaning "of" and "hazor" referring to a hazel tree or grove. This suggests the name may have initially referred to someone who lived near or worked with hazel trees.

The earliest recorded examples of the DESHAZOR name can be traced back to records from the Normandy region of northern France in the 13th century. Variants such as DeHazor, DeHazour, and Deshaizor appear in tax rolls and parish documents from this time.

In the 14th century, a nobleman named Jean Deshazor was mentioned in the records of the Duchy of Burgundy as a landowner and minor noble. Another early bearer of the name was Guillaume Deshazor, a merchant from Rouen who was involved in the international wool trade in the late 1300s.

As the name spread across France, it became associated with certain places. The small village of Deshazor in the Pays de la Loire region may have been named after an early resident bearing the surname. Similarly, there is a Bois Deshazor (Deshazor Woods) referenced in records from Picardy in the 1500s.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name outside of France was Robert Deshazor, an English lawyer and judge who lived from 1520 to 1587. He served on the Court of Common Pleas during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

In the 1600s, a French Huguenot family named Deshazor fled religious persecution and settled in Prussia, helping to establish the name in Germany. Jacques Deshazor (1634-1708) was a notable member of this branch who became a successful merchant and town councilor in Berlin.

As the name spread further in the following centuries, other notable bearers included the French artist Marcel Deshazor (1772-1844), the Dutch naval officer Dirk Deshazor (1793-1862), and the American frontiersman and trapper Joseph Deshazor (1815-1892) who explored parts of the Rocky Mountains.
