The history of the last name Diec

The surname DIEC is a rare name that originated in the Auvergne region of central France during the late medieval period. It likely derived from the Old French word "diec," meaning a dike or earthen embankment, suggesting the name may have originally referred to someone who lived near or worked on a dike. Alternatively, it could stem from a place name containing the element "diec."

One of the earliest known records of the DIEC name appears in a 14th-century document from the town of Clermont-Ferrand, where a certain Jean DIEC is mentioned as a landowner. Another early reference comes from a 1487 tax record in the village of Riom, listing a Jacques DIEC among the local residents.

In the 16th century, the DIEC name can be found in church records from the nearby town of Issoire, where a Marie DIEC was born in 1532. Around the same time, a Pierre DIEC (1511-1586) served as a magistrate in the city of Montferrand, now part of Clermont-Ferrand.

During the 17th century, the DIEC family seems to have spread to other parts of France, with records showing a Jean DIEC (1623-1698) working as a merchant in Bordeaux, while a Claude DIEC (1651-1712) was a priest in the town of Beaune in Burgundy.

One notable figure with the DIEC surname was Jacques-François DIEC (1764-1842), a French Revolutionary soldier who fought in several major battles and later became a successful entrepreneur in Paris. Another was the 19th-century painter Émile DIEC (1828-1891), whose landscapes and rural scenes were exhibited at the Paris Salon.
