The surname DIMEO is of Italian origin, first appearing in the region of Campania during the late 15th century. It is believed to have derived from the Latin deminutive form of "Dominicus", meaning "belonging to the Lord". The earliest recorded spelling of the name was "Di Meo", which was a common patronymic form used in southern Italy.

DIMEO is thought to have originated in the town of Acerra, near Naples, where it was borne by a family of minor nobility. In 1487, a certain Gaspare Di Meo was mentioned in a deed of sale for a plot of land in the nearby village of Pomigliano d'Arco. This is one of the earliest known written records of the surname.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the name began to spread throughout the Kingdom of Naples and surrounding areas. Notable bearers from this period include Giovan Battista Di Meo, a poet and philosopher from Avellino who lived from 1532 to 1617, and Michelangelo Di Meo, a sculptor and architect active in Naples between 1585 and 1650.
