The surname DINARTE originated in Portugal during the late Middle Ages. It is a variant spelling of the more common Portuguese surname "Diniz", which itself derives from the given name "Dinis" or "Dionísio", the Portuguese form of the Ancient Greek name "Dionysios".

The earliest known records of the DINARTE surname date back to the 14th century, appearing in municipal archives and property deeds across central and northern Portugal. Some historians believe the name may have roots among the Sephardic Jewish community that once thrived in medieval Portugal.

One of the first documented individuals with this surname was João Dinarte, a merchant from the town of Bragança who lived from around 1380 to 1445. Historical records indicate he engaged in trade throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

Another early bearer of the name was Diogo Dinarte, a soldier who fought for the Portuguese crown during the Reconquista campaigns against the Moors in the 15th century. He is mentioned in chronicles detailing the conquest of Ceuta in 1415.
