The history of the last name Echazabal

The surname ECHAZABAL originated in the Basque Country, a region straddling the border between northern Spain and southwestern France. It likely emerged in the late medieval period, around the 14th or 15th century. The name is derived from the Basque words "etxe" meaning "house" and "zabal" meaning "wide" or "broad," suggesting it may have referred to a person living in a large or spacious house.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name can be found in the municipal records of the town of Labastide-Clairence in southwestern France, where an Arnaud d'Echazabal is mentioned in a document dated 1412. In the 16th century, the name appears in various administrative records from the Spanish Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, such as Juan de Echazabal, a landowner from Mutriku mentioned in a 1538 census.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, several members of the Echazabal family achieved prominence in the region. Martín de Echazabal (1619-1687) was a Basque military officer who served in the Spanish army during the Thirty Years' War and later became the mayor of the town of Eibar. Juan Bautista de Echazabal (1678-1745) was a renowned architect who designed several churches and buildings in the Basque Country, including the Church of Santa María in Tolosa.

In the 19th century, the Echazabal surname spread to other parts of Spain and the Americas due to migration and emigration. One notable figure was José María Echazabal (1810-1892), a Cuban politician and landowner who served as the mayor of Havana from 1868 to 1869. Another was Sebastián Echazabal (1828-1903), a Spanish military officer who fought in the Third Carlist War and later became the governor of the Spanish colony of Fernando Po (now Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea).

Other individuals with the Echazabal surname include Miguel Echazabal (1832-1904), a Basque writer and historian who published several works on the history and culture of the Basque people, and Pablo Echazabal (1892-1964), a Spanish politician and lawyer who served as the mayor of Bilbao from 1951 to 1958.
