EKECHUKWU is derived from the Igbo words "eke" meaning "a portion or share" and "chukwu" meaning "the almighty God". Thus, the name can be interpreted as "a share or portion from God". It likely originated as a name given to a child considered a gift or blessing from God.

Some of the earliest written records of the EKECHUKWU name come from Christian missionaries and colonial officials in the 19th century who documented Igbo names and language. One early example is found in the 1862 book "A Dictionary of the Ibo Language" by J.F. Schön, which includes the entry "Ekechukwu - one that has come from God".
