It is derived from the Old English words "ēan" meaning lone and "with" meaning willow, combined with the Old English word "hiwisc" meaning family or household. The earliest known record of the surname Entwisle appears in the Assize Rolls of Lancashire in 1285, where it was spelled "Hennetwisill." The Entwisles were a prominent landowning family in the Bury area of Lancashire from the 14th to the 17th centuries.
