The surname Fourroux originated in the Franche-Comté region of eastern France, near the border with Switzerland. It dates back to the late medieval period, around the 13th or 14th century. The name is derived from the Old French words "fourre" meaning a sheath or case, and "roux" meaning red-haired, suggesting it may have been a descriptive nickname for someone with reddish hair who made or sold sheaths or cases.

Early variations of the spelling included Fouroux, Fourroud, and Furroux. While not found in the famous Domesday Book of 1086, which covered only parts of England, the name does appear in some regional records and medieval manuscripts from the Franche-Comté area.

One of the earliest recorded bearers of the name was Jean Fourroux, born around 1450 in the village of Montbeliard, who was a local landowner and vintner. Another early example is Pierre Fourroux, born circa 1520 in Besançon, who was a respected scholar and theologian at the University of Dole.
