The history of the last name Gabos

The surname GABOS is believed to have its origins in the Basque region of northern Spain and southwestern France. It is thought to derive from the Basque word "gabo" meaning "night" or "darkness". This suggests that the name may have been a nickname or descriptive name given to someone who worked at night or in dimly lit conditions.

The earliest recorded instances of the name date back to the late 15th century in records from the village of Lesaka in Navarre, Spain. Variations in spelling include Gabo, Gabos, Gavos, and Gaboz. The name appears in parish records and tax rolls from this area during the 1400s and 1500s.

In the 16th century, a Juan Gabos is mentioned as a merchant in the city of San Sebastian, Spain. He is recorded as being involved in trade with other parts of Europe, particularly France and England. Gabos family names are also found in records from the nearby French Basque regions during this time period.

A Petri Gabos is listed in a 1638 census record from the town of Urruña in Lower Navarre, which was then part of the Kingdom of Navarre but is now in the French Basque Country. He is recorded as a farmer and landowner.

The name appears to have spread from its Basque origins into other parts of Spain and Europe over the following centuries. In 1712, a Miguel Gabos served as a soldier in the Spanish Army during the War of the Spanish Succession. Historical records show he fought at the Battle of Villaviciosa.

An Ana Gabos is recorded as being born in 1783 in the village of Zugarramurdi in Navarre, near the French border. She later married and moved to Madrid, where records show her living until her death in 1867 at the age of 84.
