The surname "Grenade" originated in France, likely in the early 15th century. It is derived from the French word "grenade," which means "pomegranate," referring to the fruit. The name may have been given to someone who lived near a pomegranate tree or dealt with the fruit in some way.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name is found in the archives of the city of Avignon, where a certain Guillaume Grenade is mentioned in a document dated 1412. Another early reference comes from the records of the town of Arles, where a Jacques Grenade is listed as a merchant in 1437.

In the 16th century, the name appears in several historical documents from the region of Provence. In 1583, a Louis Grenade is recorded as a landowner in the village of Lambesc. Around the same time, a family by the name of Grenade settled in the town of Aix-en-Provence, where they became prominent local figures.
