The surname GUOX originated in the Fujian province of southeastern China during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is derived from the Min Nan Chinese dialect word "gu-o̍h" which roughly translates to "ancient valley" or "old valley." This suggests the name may have originated as a place name for a particular valley settlement where the earliest bearers resided.
Records from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) show the GUOX surname appeared in local gazetteers and village records across several counties in Fujian, indicating it was an established surname among rural farming communities by that time. One of the earliest recorded individuals was Guox Jingyuan (1612-1681), a scholar and poet from Tong'an County who authored works on Confucian philosophy.
During the 18th century, the surname spread beyond Fujian as some GUOX families migrated to neighboring Guangdong province. A notable figure was Guox Zhiyong (1719-1788), a merchant and philanthropist from Chaozhou who funded the construction of schools and libraries in his hometown.
In the 19th century, Chinese emigration to Southeast Asia increased, and the GUOX surname can be found among early overseas Chinese communities. One example is Guox Bingwen (1838-1912), a successful businessman in British Malaya who helped establish one of the earliest Chinese temples in Kuala Lumpur.
As China opened up in the late 19th century, some GUOX individuals achieved prominence. This includes Guox Songtao (1818-1889), a Qing Dynasty diplomat who negotiated treaties with Western powers, and Guox Jiguang (1859-1935), a general during the Xinhai Revolution which overthrew imperial rule.
Throughout the 20th century, several GUOX descendants made contributions across various fields, such as Guox Xinshu (1892-1950), a renowned educator and founder of Xiamen University, and Guox Shoujing (1918-2014), a celebrated physicist and academic.
