The history of the last name Hanor

The surname "HANOR" is believed to have originated in England during the medieval period. It is thought to derive from the Old English words "han" meaning "rooster" and "or" meaning "a sloping shore or river bank". This suggests that the name may have initially referred to someone who lived near a riverbank or coastal area where roosters were kept.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name can be found in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as "Hanora", referring to a landowner in the county of Suffolk. This indicates that the name was already established in East Anglia by the late 11th century.

In the 13th century, a variant spelling "Hanour" can be found in the Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire, suggesting that the name had spread to other parts of eastern England. A notable bearer from this time was John Hanour (c. 1220-1289), a wealthy merchant and landowner in the city of Lincoln.

During the 14th century, the name appears to have gained a foothold in the Midlands region, with records showing a Robert Hanor residing in Warwickshire in 1327. Around the same time, a John Hanor (c. 1310-1378) served as a member of the Royal Household under King Edward III.

The 16th century saw the emergence of a prominent family of Hanors in Gloucestershire. This included William Hanor (1501-1572), a successful wool merchant and benefactor who endowed a school in the town of Tewkesbury. His grandson, also named William Hanor (1542-1618), was a noted scholar and clergyman who served as Archdeacon of Gloucester.

In the 17th century, the name appears to have spread to other parts of the British Isles, with a Thomas Hanor (1620-1689) recorded as a landowner in County Antrim, Ireland. Meanwhile, in Scotland, a James Hanor (1638-1712) was a prominent merchant and civic leader in the city of Aberdeen.
