The history of the last name Hartupee

The surname Hartupee is believed to have originated in the medieval German region of Bavaria, dating back to around the 11th or 12th century. It may have derived from the Old German words "hart" meaning hard or strong, and "upee" which could refer to a small creek or stream. This suggests the name may have initially referred to someone who lived near a strong, swift-flowing stream.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name appears in the Bavarian municipal records of Landshut from 1327, where a Hartwin Hartupee is listed as a local landowner. The spelling varied somewhat in these early mentions, with forms like "Hartuppe" and "Hartuppey" also appearing.

In the 15th century, the name spread more widely across southern Germany as the Hartupee family established itself in cities like Munich and Augsburg. A notable bearer was Johannes Hartupee (1441-1511), a respected jurist and legal scholar who served on the municipal council of Regensburg.

As the Hartupee name travelled westward into France and the Low Countries over subsequent centuries, it underwent further spelling evolutions like "Hartupé" and "Hartupay". A Dutch merchant named Pieter Hartupee (1598-1671) is recorded as having conducted extensive trade throughout the Baltic region.

In England, the earliest known instance dates to 1642 with the birth of William Hartupee in the village of Crayford, Kent. He later fought for Parliament during the English Civil War. Two centuries later, the explorer and naturalist Sir Edward Hartupee (1832-1901) led expeditions mapping unexplored regions of Borneo and Sumatra.

Crossing the Atlantic, the first North American bearer appears to be Johann Hartupee, an immigrant from Bavaria who settled in Pennsylvania in 1753. His descendants went on to fight in the American Revolutionary War, including Private Michael Hartupee (1756-1841) of the Virginia militia.
