The surname HENNIX originated in the region of Westphalia, Germany during the medieval period. It is derived from the Old German word "henni" which means "rooster" or "cockerel". The name likely referred to a person who raised or kept roosters, or perhaps someone with a strutting or cocky demeanor.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name can be found in the Wittenberg Parish Registers from 1492, where a Hennrich Hennix is mentioned. In the 16th century, the Hennix family could be found in the town of Münster, Westphalia. A notable member was Johann Hennix, a Lutheran minister born in 1523 who played a role in the Reformation.

The name appears to have spread from Westphalia to other parts of Germany and neighboring regions. In 1612, a Bartolomäus Hennix is recorded in church records from Strasbourg, Alsace.
