The history of the last name Hepperly

The surname Hepperly originated in the region of Northamptonshire, England during the late medieval period. It is believed to be derived from the Old English words "heppel" meaning bramble or briar patch, and "leah" meaning a clearing or meadow. This suggests the name may have initially referred to someone who lived near a briar patch clearing.

One of the earliest known records of the name is found in the Pipe Rolls of Northamptonshire from 1195, which mentions a Richard de Heppelea. The spellings Hepperley and Heppeley also appear in various 13th and 14th century tax and parish records throughout Northamptonshire.

In the 16th century, the name began appearing in its more modern spelling of Hepperly, such as in the 1592 baptismal record of John Hepperly in the parish of Staverton, Northamptonshire. Around this time, the Hepperly family had established itself in the village of Woodford, Northamptonshire, where they lived for several generations.

Notable individuals with the surname Hepperly include William Hepperly (1598-1672), a wealthy landowner and member of the gentry in Woodford. His grandson, also named William Hepperly (1645-1712), was a prominent magistrate and served as High Sheriff of Northamptonshire in 1695.

Another early bearer of the name was John Hepperly (1622-1681), a successful merchant and alderman in the city of Coventry, Warwickshire. His son, Thomas Hepperly (1663-1732), became a renowned clockmaker and established a family business that continued for generations.

In the 18th century, many Hepperlys emigrated from England to the American colonies, with several settling in Pennsylvania and Virginia. One of the earliest recorded arrivals was Henry Hepperly, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1732 aboard the ship Britannia.

While the Hepperly name is relatively uncommon today, it maintains a strong connection to its origins in the English countryside of Northamptonshire and the hardworking families who bore the name throughout history.
