The surname HONOHAN originated in Ireland. It is an Anglicized form of the Old Irish Gaelic name O'Conahain, which means 'descendant of Conan'. The name is derived from the personal name Conan, an ancient Irish name of Celtic origin meaning 'little wolf' or 'little hound'.

The HONOHAN surname is found primarily in counties Cork and Limerick in the southern province of Munster, Ireland. The earliest recorded spelling of the name is O'Conohane, which appears in the Annals of the Four Masters, a chronicle of medieval Irish history compiled in the early 17th century.

One of the earliest known bearers of the name was Dermot O'Conohane, who was listed as a landowner in the parish of Rathkeale, County Limerick, in the 1659 Census of Ireland. In the 1766 Religious Census of Ireland, several HONOHAN families were recorded in the parish of Kilshannig, County Cork.
